Professional Career
Apart from Al D'Amato's service in the New York Senate, he has held several political and private positions. His ?esumé includes positions as actor, author, consultant, commentator, fundraiser, People's Administrator and Tax Assessor. Al D'Amato currently serves as managing director for Computer Associates and Park Strategies, LLC, where he makes use of his diverse background in politics and law.
Nassau County, New York gave Al D'Amato his start. In 1965, Mr. D'Amato served as public administrator of Nassau County dealing with the assets of people who passed away without wills. He held this position until 1968 when he became tax assessor in Hempstead, N.Y. He held the position of tax assessor until 1971, when he became town supervisor in Hampstead and eventually vice chairman of Nassau County Board of Supervisors starting 1977 and continuing until 1980. He left this office to run for New York State Senator in 1980, winning the seat, and serving until 1998.
During and after his service as Senator, Al D'Amato was active in several fund raising events. He served as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, raising $54 million. He also worked as a fundraiser for William Powers, chairman of New York State, and Ronald S. Lauder, New York Republican mayoral candidate.
In addition to his fund raising abilities, Mr. D'Amato is an accomplished writer. He wrote a column for George Magazine until 2001 when the magazine ceased publication. He has also written the book "Power, Pasta, and Politics: The World According to Senator Al D'Amato." The book contains a forward by former Senator Bob Dole and an introduction by former Mayor Ed Koch. Al D'Amato also tried his hand at television and movies. He regularly appeared as a commentator on Fox News. He also appeared as himself in the 1997 movie The Devil's Advocate.
Al D'Amato has a diverse set of skills that stem from his political experience. He has taken his political expertise and used them in consulting services and fundraising activities. He continues to be agile and powerful force in New York politics and the Republican Party.
